The NSW Junior Chess League's Primary Schools One-Day Tournaments started in 1981 with a tournament in the Macarthur District (Campbelltown); 18 teams from 9 schools participated. Since then the competition has grown into a series of 33 district tournaments across the state followed by finals; in 2008 the tournaments were contested by 1120 teams from 266 schools.
