Central
Coast Junior Tournament
Mingara Chess Club will again host the Mingara Junior Open Championship over the Christmas school holidays.
Where and When: The event is set for Mingara Recreation Club, Mingara Drive, Tumbi Umbi (Central Coast) on Monday, January 18, from 11am to 4pm, and is open to all players aged 17 or younger at the start of the year. Players younger than 10 are to have a parent present at all times. There will be plenty of beginners, but as a minimum the players should know how to correctly move the pieces.
Prizes: As with the inaugural 2009 event, prizes will be awarded to placegetters in each age division as well as for solving chess puzzles posted between rounds. The divisions will be determined by dividing the field into roughly equal groups of 8-10 players.
Rated by NSWJCL: The event will provide a chance for new players to measure their ability by gaining a rating issued by the NSW Junior Chess League. Players already rated will see their ratings rise or fall according to their results.
Entries: The entry fee is $10 (payable on the day) and the field will be limited to 50 players.
To enter, parents should provide their name, phone number, e-mail address, child’s name and date of birth by contacting Mingara’s Junior Chess Co-ordinator Gary Losh on 4390 8176 or at glosh51@dodo.com.au
Practice Puzzles: Practice puzzles with answers should be attached to this e-mail along with “Annexure A – Recording Moves”. Help will be available on the day for those unable to write their answers, but we encourage all beginners to learn the notation to enable them to learn from written lessons.
Food: Mingara Recreation Club, a generous sponsor of our junior chess group, has a policy of not allowing “outside food” to be consumed at the club. However, the club has given permission for packed snacks to be brought for the children.
Enquiries: General enquiries are welcome either about the tournament or about our regular Wednesday afternoon junior coaching/competition sessions. Contact Mingara’s Junior Chess Co-ordinator Gary Losh on 4390 8176 or at glosh51@dodo.com.au
